20 YEARS OF IMAGES
– An international festival that presents contemporary art from developing countries
Since 1991, the eight IMAGES festivals have taken contemporary art and the most up-to-date examples of cultural expression from developing countries and presented them to the Danish public. Over the years, several thousand artists from more than 60 countries have participated in the festivals, introducing cultures that most people would otherwise have no knowledge or exposure to. Through events which have surprised, overwhelmed and brought down barriers, the festival has overturned stereotypes, challenged prejudice and opened people’s eyes to unknown, inaccessible areas, and shown other facets of the world. The festival has told stories of human similarities and cultural differences, creating awareness and inspiration, vision and insight, and fostered knowledge.
The Images concept was launched with Images of Africa in 1991. Since then, there have been two more Images of Africa, in 1993 and 1996, respectively. Images of the World followed in 2000, Images of Asia in 2003, Images of the Middle East in 2006 and lastly My World IMAGES in 2010.
